Prescription requirements
Do you need a prescription to rent equipment?
Three simple rules cover almost every rental. Oxygen always needs a prescription. Anything billed to insurance needs one too. Self-pay rentals of other equipment don’t. Here is how each case works.
The three rules
One rule for oxygen. One for insurance. One for self-pay.
Most calls we get about prescriptions come down to how the rental is being paid for. Find your situation below — or call (516) 623-9500 and we will sort it out with you.
Oxygen concentrators, portable oxygen units and oxygen tanks always require a valid prescription from your physician — whether insurance is paying or you are.
If we are billing Medicare, Medicaid or another insurance plan for your rental, a valid physician prescription is required.
Renting a hospital bed, wheelchair, patient lift or other non-oxygen equipment and paying yourself? No prescription needed. See self-pay equipment rental.
Don’t have a prescription yet?
That is more common than you would think. Your treating physician writes the prescription — if you are being discharged from a hospital, the care team can include it in the discharge paperwork. Call us first and we will tell you exactly what to ask for, so you only have to ask once. We confirm the prescription and verify coverage before anything is delivered. Our insurance page lists the plans we work with.

Do I need a prescription to rent oxygen?
Yes — always. Oxygen concentrators, portable oxygen units and oxygen tanks all require a valid prescription from your physician, whether you are paying yourself or billing insurance.
Do I need a prescription for a hospital bed or wheelchair?
Only if the rental is billed to insurance. If you rent a hospital bed, wheelchair or other non-oxygen equipment on self-pay, no prescription is needed.
What if my insurance is paying?
Then a valid physician prescription is required for the rental. We verify your coverage and the prescription before delivery — call (516) 623-9500 and we will walk you through what we need.
Who can write the prescription?
Your treating physician — including the physician managing a hospital discharge. The prescription needs to cover the equipment being rented.
I don’t have a prescription yet. What should I do?
Call us first. We will tell you exactly what to ask your doctor for — and if you are renting non-oxygen equipment on self-pay, you can start without one.
Not sure which rule applies? Call us.
