Flying with a portable oxygen concentrator. What to know before you go.

Traveling with oxygen takes a little planning — the right unit, enough batteries, and your airline notified in advance. Here is how it works, and how a short-term rental can cover your trip.

Airline rules

FAA rules for flying with oxygen.

Only FAA-approved portable oxygen concentrators are allowed on US commercial flights — compressed oxygen tanks are not. Your airline will ask for:

  • A unit on the FAA approved list
  • Battery power for 150% of your flight time (including connections and delays)
  • Advance notice — most airlines want 48 hours and a physician statement

Rules vary slightly by airline, so confirm with yours before booking. See our portable oxygen concentrator rentals.

Before you fly

Your pre-flight checklist.

  • Prescription: oxygen requires a valid prescription — have a copy with you.
  • Batteries: fully charge every battery; pack enough for 150% of flight time.
  • Airline notice: call the airline at least 48 hours ahead with your physician statement.
  • Backup plan: know where to get help at your destination — we deliver across the NYC area if plans change.

Why rent

Renting for a trip vs. buying.

If you only need oxygen while traveling — or your home unit is not FAA-approved — renting a portable concentrator for the trip is the simple option. Month-to-month terms mean you are not buying a unit for one vacation. We deliver it before you leave and pick it up when you are back.

Call (516) 623-9500 and tell us your travel dates — we will match a unit and battery setup to your itinerary.
